about ahs rocket team

Amory High School Rocket Team began many years ago through the Amory High School senior Advanced Placement Physics class. Under the careful direction of Mrs. Mary Beth Boyer Black along with the team's wonderful N.A.R. Aurora sponsor Mr. Greg Stewart, students have had the opportunity to explore applicable science and STEM skills on a deeper level than most high school students ever get the chance to. The school-year long goal is to shoot a qualifying flight that will place the team in the top 100 teams across the United States that will land us in the Team America Rocketry Challenge nationals competition in Washington D.C. in May. Amory High School has placed, and been able to carry 3 teams to nationals since 2014. Out of this year's AP Physics rocket teams, one team qualified and placed in the top 100 which means 12 of our students, along with Mr. Greg, Mrs. Black, and three parent chaperones, have the opportunity to go to the TARC Nationals competition this May. Our teams have been working diligently, and we are more than proud to announce that one of our teams qualified, and is the only rocket team across the state of Mississippi that qualified for the TARC national competition.

Beginnings

competition rules

In order for a team's rocket to qualify, a team must shoot a rocket that reaches an altitude of 850 feet in 44-46 seconds. The rocket must be at least 650 millimeters tall, and must not exceed a weight of 650 grams. Carrying two specifically sized, raw eggs, one vertical and one horizontal, and the rocket must return in one piece, with both eggs still in tact without as much as a hairline crack to avoid disqualification. A perfect score is 0 points, and TARC takes the sum of a team's two best qualifying scores out of three flights.

After many practice flights under the guidance of Mr. Greg, both AHS teams called in their qualifying flights on April 3rd and 4th. The qualifying team made it in the top 100 with a combined score of 27 points. This year, TARC began cutting teams with combined scores higher than 36. The competition will be held May 14-15 in Washington D.C., but the team is expecting to fly out on May 11 and return May 16.
